ABOUT
Personal Background

Upbringing

Born and raised near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, I'm proud to say that I'm from a working-class background. As the first in my family to attend university, aside from my great-aunt's daughter, I'm determined to make a name for myself and make my family proud.
Now medically retired, my mum instilled a strong work ethic and attention to detail in me through her various walks of life, her favourite being as a Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant. I have inherited this attitude, having worked consistently in a range of jobs since age fifteen. Ultimately, I hope to have a full-time career in poetry and publishing.

Education and Interests

In 2024 I graduated from the University of Warwick with a First Class degree in English Literature and Creative Writing (with Honours), which I am overjoyed by. I was also nominated for Student of the Year for my efforts in the Warwick Award, essentially meaning I balanced numerous paid and unpaid commitments alongside my studies. These include: co-managing BoundBy and HerCampus Warwick, being on the organising committee for BeaconLit, academic tutoring, volunteering at Warwick Arts Centre, being Vice President of Warwick Tabletop Games and Role-playing Society, caring for my mum and more.

If I have spare time, I'll paint with acrylic (my mum describes these markings as 'abstract') or watercolour (normally snapshots of nature), embroider, mess around in my shed, read poetry or translated fiction, talk to my plants or maybe pick up a new hobby. But spare time is hard to come by and I spend most of it writing.

Career Aspirations

After studying Practice of Poetry during my second year of university, I knew my interest in the form went beyond casual appreciation. The module encouraged me to remove my prejudices about the form as being technique-based and in the romantic style, showing me how exciting poetic play is. Warwick kickstarted my career aspirations and gave me the confidence to experiment with tone, form and content. And, as I began reading contemporary poetry, I saw the many subgenres within an already niche form, and that is when I started to find my own voice.

I'm hoping to complete a Masters degree in Creative Writing or Publishing in the near future but am working on securing funding. In the meantime, I am writing when I can, expanding my network and seeking freelance work. I'm playing the long game, so keep an eye out for when I'm published in print and doing regular events.
