BeaconLit

An annual literary festival that fundraises for the local community libraries.

BeaconLit Book Festival began in 2013 as a humble one-day event at Ivinghoe Lawn, Buckinghamshire, with a marquee at the park. It has since grown massively, now having a full event schedule and simultaneously-running sessions. Be it a panel of authors, a one-on-one interview or an interactive writing workshop, each has something to offer.

Tring's Our Bookshop (website here) are on hand each year to sell each author's work, making it just that much easier to get your copy signed in the after-session signing. There's also a humble food station where beverages, cakes and snacks can be purchased. All profits raised from this, and the ticket prices, are invested into the Beacon Villages Community Libraries. The BeaconLit committee are passionate about supporting the maintenance of an invaluable part of the local area that's free to use.

I joined the organising committee in Spring 2023 after befriending Dave Sivers, Co-Founder of the festival as well as a local crime author. My responsibilities are centred around website design support and contributing to the monthly meeting discussions. For the 2024 event, I pitched, planned and arranged a Poetry Circle, the first of its kind. This was a huge privilege (and challenge) so seeing it come to fruition on the day of the festival made me proud. I'd recruited some excellent poets- one local to the area and two from Warwickshire- who are serious about their craft but more so about poetic play. It was an honour to see my village get excited about poetry in the same way I do.

I'm excited to continue my involvement in BeaconLit Book Festival and to see how it will expand in 2025. See the link below to keep up with project updates and for a summary of the 2024 event.
